Sri. C. Achutha Menon Government College, Thrissur, is an institution of higher education under the Collegiate Education Department, Govt. of Kerala. Named after one of the eminent chief ministers of Kerala, the institution, drawing its inspiration from the values and visions enshrined in the Constitution of India, aims at moulding the young seekers of the knowledge as responsible citizens of a secular and democratic country duly conscious of their rights and duties, apart from providing a proper direction for their intellectual and aesthetic pursuits.
The college started functioning on 14 August 1972 in the premises of the present Institute of Advanced Study in Education (IASE), Palace Road, Thrissur, then known as The Government Training College, Thrissur. In 1991 the college was shifted to its present lush green campus at Kuttanellur, on the outskirts of Thrissur town, fulfilling one of the long cherished academic dreams of the denizens of Thrissur.
The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut and strictly follows the Government and University rules and regulations in its day-to-day governance and also in the process of the admission of students, and the appointment of faculty members/other staff. Annual elections to the posts of College Students Union are held in every academic year in accordance with the norms of the Lyngdoh Committee Report and the directives and statutes issued by the University.
Ample facilities are provided to the members of the institution for developing an integrated personality. It maintains a library of more than 50000 books with a reading room for various magazines and newspapers, spacious playing fields for outdoor games, and a well-equipped fitness centre. The students are encouraged to participate in national integration and social awareness programmes through NCC and NSS. The platforms like Red Ribbon Club, Nature Club, Bird Watching Club, and Film Club offer multifaceted extra-curricular ventures to the students and staff. Besides these clubs and statutory bodies, there are various departmental level inter collegiate programmes organized by the students with the support of the faculty members of concerned departments. The College PTA has instituted a number of prizes to the students for their achievements in academic and extracurricular activities along with a number of welfare schemes for the students. The various outreach ventures organized by the different bodies of the college open up the infrastructural and academic facilities of the college for the benefit of the local community where the college is situated.
