The college started functioning on 14 August 1972 in the premises of the present Institute of Advanced Study in Education (IASE), Palace Road, Thrissur, then known as The Government Training College, Thrissur. In 1991 the college was shifted to its present lush green campus at Kuttanellur, on the outskirts of Thrissur town, fulfilling one of the long cherished academic dreams of the denizens of Thrissur.

The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut and strictly follows the Government and University rules and regulations in its day-to-day governance and also in the process of the admission of students, and the appointment of faculty members/other staff.
