Innovative Programmes
The NSS unit of the college has undertaken seven innovative programmes. Eco-friendly activities are given importance as we have a commitment to protect the mother earth. Some of the innovative programmes are in fact model activities that could be implemented throughout our country. Plastic and plastic materials should be reduced and effective measures should be implemented for reusing and recycling plastic materials. e-waste collection and scientific recycling, grow bags for vegetable cultivation from flex banners , making of paper pens with a seed in it and toy collection for children are some of the innovative programmes carried out the NSS unit of the college.
1.e-waste Paves Way for Charity
The NSS volunteers have come with a novel idea of collecting e-waste from the locality with a charitable mission. The earnest efforts of the volunteers resulted in collecting more than four tones of e-waste and sold it to Clean Kerala Company for the scientific recycling. e-waste is creating a lot of troubles in the society as people do not know what to do with these materials. Clean Kerala Company, an initiative of the Govt. of Kerala, has agreed to take the e-waste from the NSS unit for Rs. 25 per one KG. Thrissur Corporation has also supported us for carrying out the project by transporting the materials to the collection centre in the college. An approximate amount of Rupees One Lac ten thousand has been received by the unit by way of selling e-waste. The money was spent for the construction of home of the cancer patient Mr. Pavithran and treatment of a patient.
2.Grow Bags from Flex Banners and Hoardings
The National Service Scheme volunteers had come up with a unique idea of making grow bags from flex banners and hoardings. NSS volunteers were given the training in making grow bags and with the help of a special type of glue they could be easily joined. The volunteers made more than hundred grow bags and many of them used for cultivating cabbage and cauliflower in the campus itself. In order to spread the message to the public and channelize the flex banners for making grow bags, the volunteers supplied them free of cost to the members of their partnership village. The NSS volunteers made more than two hundred flex grow bags and gave to the villagers of our partnership village for vegetable cultivation.
3. Food fest for charity
The National Service Scheme volunteers conducted a food fest for raising fund for constructing a house for the paralytic. The volunteers were asked to bring the delicious snacks that their mothers offer them. The volunteers supplied the food items free of cost and the income generated will be used for the “Ahhayam Project”. It was an occasion for the NSS volunteers to know about the process of making traditional food and develop entrepreneurship.
4. Library at Tribal Village in Sasthampoovam
The National Service Scheme volunteers initiated a noble venture in improving the reading skill by donating books to the tribal children at Sasthampoovam Colony in Annapantham. The NSS volunteers collected books from the students of the college by conducting a campaign in every classroom and requested them to donate books for setting up a library in the tribal colony. The staff and students of the college generously contributed more than thousand books. The library for the tribal children was inaugurated by the Mattathoor Grama Panchayath President Mr. P. C. Subran.
5.Pen for the Protection of Environment
The National Service Scheme volunteers made a revolution in the realm of making paper pens for the protection of environment. A seed of a fruit bearing tree placed inside the paper pens and once the pen is disposed after use there will be a sprouting of a new tree. The volunteers of the college were given training in making paper pens being part of their skill development. Paper pens are cheaper and it is eco friendly. The programme was a part of the observance of green protocol in the campus. The volunteersmade more than one thousand paper pens and supplied to various departments of the college on special occasion. The price of a paper pen is Rs. 5 and the income generated is used for constructing a toilet for a slum dweller.
6. Toys for Tots
Toys never grow old and the images are as fresh as in the month of May in every mind. Toy industry flourishes all over the world as children exist and it leaves behind a lot of fond memories. As children lose interest in toys due to familiarity they become mere waste. In a nuclear family system toys are destined to remain untouched by succeeding generation. The motto of the programme “Toys for Tots” was for upholding three “R”: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle plastics.
