NSS 2018-2019

The College is the home to two units of NSS namely 98 and 129 consisting of 200 students. Unit 98 were under the leadership of Aparna Suresh and Lithin and unit 128 under Vaidehi Rajagopalan and Shyam PH,who acted as the secretaries and Athifa as the camp leader for the academic year 2018-2019.

The units started its sphere of activity by giving an orientation programme for the 1st year NSS volunteers.This year was marked by wide varieties of activities within the campus and outside the campus.The unique venture of the year was inculcating a value of self-sufficiency among the volunteers by  teaching them to make soaps. Volunteers made soaps which were sold among the staff and students. The fund raised were used to buy books for poor school going children in the Mathilakam area were seven-day residential camp took place. Apart from that the volunteers were also imparted the technique of making files and pens using paper. This, to an extent reduced the level of plastic usage inside the campus. The college campus provided venue for various competitions starting from the block level competition of speak for India to the district level of National Youth Parliament.NSS volunteers observed various days ranging from mental health day to no tobacco day. On mental health day the volunteers were given a seminar on mental health and on ‘No tobacco day’ the whole college under the leadership of NSS units took a pledge against the usage of tobacco.

Volunteers attended diverse range of seminars outside the campus starting from Gandhi@ 150 organized by Nehru Yuvajana Kendra, Gynaecology seminar organized by Thrissur Medical college, Rebuilding Kerala organized by ESAF and Don Bosco college. The volunteers also presented their papers on rebuilding Kerala at the same venue which received a great level of appreciation.

When Kerala witnessed the disastrous flood in the month of August, our volunteers along with the programme officers extended helping hand for all the needy ones. We engaged ourselves in wide varieties of activities from cleaning the houses, collecting essentials from different parts of Thrissur and helping the government in making kits for those affected by the flood. Along with that the volunteers were engaged in cleaning activities inside the campus, plastic collection and waste management during the D zone festival held in the campus.The NSS units organized one blood donation camp inside the campus coordinating with BDK Thrissur, and one Diabetes camp at Thrissur railway station. Our volunteers have been constantly helping the blind during their chess competitions and their other activities held at Puthur.

During the academic year the second-year volunteers participated in the seven-day camp and a 3day nature camp. The seven-day camp was held at Mathilakam with different kinds of activities that included conducting a health survey, cleaning the Canoli canal, visiting a historical site: Elvanjikullam and constructing pakalveedu. The students also witnessed different kinds of seminars and enjoyed themselves organizing cultural programmes. In the same span of time a hand written magazine was also released which included the works of NSS volunteers. The three-day nature camp was held at Peechi where the volunteers went for trekking in Peechi- vazhanji wildlife sanctuary and attended wide range of seminars related to wildlife.

The academic year was witnessed with unique and interesting activities that helped our volunteers to achieve all round personality development and also helped in developing our society.

UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENTS BY THE NSS VOLUNTEERS :

  1. First prize (Shramadaan Video Challenge Award 2018 for the district level video making challenge organised underSwachh Bharat Summer Internship and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Thrissur.
  2. Aparna Suresh banned first prize in thedeclamation contest in the block leveland district level organised by nehru yuva Kendra associating with ministry of youth affairs as part of republic day celebrations 2019.she also won the District level speak for India debating contest conducted by mathrubhumi in association with federal Bank in 2018 and 2019
  3. Our NSS volunteers actively participated in the national level paper presentation organised by ESAF and Habitat. Aparna Suresh and Vaidehi Rajagopal banned first and second prizes respectively.
  4. Whole hearted participation by our NSS volunteers in the relief and rehabilitation activities during the Kerala Flood 2018 were recognised by the government of Kerala by presenting “BIG SALUTE TO THE HELPING HANDS “certificates presented to the volunteers by The District Collector Thrissur.
  5. Our NSS volunteers actively participated in the Swatch Bharath Summer Internship Programme 2019 and the team lead by Ameena Thasnim A J won first prize in the district level with a cash prize of Rs 30000/-.
