Department of English

The history of the English department is inextricably linked with that of the college. The English Department has been one of the pioneering departments of the college which started an undergraduate programme in 1972. The postgraduate programme in English Language and Literature was introduced in 1998. The Department is committed to enriching the lives of its students by empowering them. The PG Department of English has been noted for its commendable achievement in the academic scenario of SCAM government College. The English Department hosts E. C Antony Memorial Lecture every year commemorating its former colleague Dr EC Antony. On top of it the department has been conducting Avalanche a lecture series on recent trends every year. keeping in alliance with curricular activities, the literary, as well as the debate clubs of the Department, perform vital roles in the college. In a way, the PG Department of English is executing the indispensable role in moulding up the educational standard of the college.

  • 6/10/2023 As part of Banned Books Week, the Department of English in collaboration with the Debate club organised a banned books exhibition and a panel discussion on “The Politics of Banning Books”

  • 3/10/2023 World Translation Day: Talk by writer, translator, and historian Dr. P.S. Manoj Kumar, Principal, Sri C. Achutha Menon Govt. College, Thrissur on the topic “Challenges of a Translator: A Personal Story.”
  • August and September 2023Online Induction Program for I M.A English students (2023 admission)

    Induction program aims at familiarizing the students with their new role as post graduates. It informs them as to what to expect from their program and how best they can prepare themselves for getting the best outcomes.

    The first Induction program was conducted on 16 August 2023. The session was handled by Dr. A. Balu Vijayaraghavan, Assistant Professor of English, Sree Krishna College Guruvayur. The speaker addressed the students on the topic “Psychoanalytic Criticism: Theory and Usage”.  He talked about the basic principles of the theory and by way of picture slides, showed how to analyze texts using this theory.

    The second session was held on 17 August 2023and was handled by Dr. Anju V.R, Guest Faculty, Dept of English, St Aloysius College, Elthuruthu. She spoke on the topic “Pruning to Prosper: an Orientation towards Creating a Better P.G. Experience”. Dr. Anju gave a comprehensive view of the recent trends in literature and gave many practical tips on writing a research paper, list of various reliable websites and provided many links for reference. She also enlightened the students about the various career possibilities after post graduation as well as tips to crack NET exam.

    The third session on 20 September 2023 was handled by Clinta P.S, Assistant professor (adhoc) at Christ College, Irinjalakkuda. She gave a comprehensive view of the different movements both in English as well as Malayalam literature and also how various social and political movements influence literature of all ages. She made the students dwell upon the reason why they had chosen English Literature as their core subject and what are the benefits of studying literature.

  • 21/09/2023The Bridge course planned for the first year UG and PG students of the Department of English was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. Manojkumar P.S on 21/09/2023. The programme was conducted atthe Department Seminar Hall at 12:15 pm. Dr. Denis Joseph Anatty Olakkengil, the Head of the Department presided over the function and Dr. Sreeparvathi D., IQAC Member felicitated the function. Nisha K. S, Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of Bridge Course in the Department delivered the welcome speech and Aleena, I Sem MA student proposed the vote of thanks. All the first year UG and PG students participated in the event.
  • 04/08/2023 The students of III BA English and the Department conducts a programme as part of Pride Month Celebration on 04/08/2023,12 pm  at Orice Hall.
